Okay, so you may be wondering why I said this when we all know that The Joker is the villain and Batman is the hero. If you’ve read anything about the new Batman movie: The Dark Knight you’ll know that the real star wasn’t Batman (Christian Bale), but The Joker (Heath Ledger). Why:
“The 180—a Second Opinion: This may be the year’s most heartbreaking film. Ledger’s performance is so incandescent, it hurts to know he won’t ever have the chance at it again.“
This, although sad and very true could possibly prove a problem in the next, highly anticipated sequel. How in the world could they possibly pull off something better than this? It just doesn’t get better, and once you walk out of that theater, literally stunned, you’ll know it.
You know, I highly recommend that movie. It was action packed, but most of all it was very-well, psychological. Not in the sense that: Oh, a higher power, love, good, peace for earth stuff I mean, The Joker wasn’t just some psychopath killing people for money, he was the type of psychopath who enjoyed stuff like pain and quite frankly, he got in everyone’s head. The Joker infected the people of Gotham with this type of spreadable fear that only comes from someone who isn’t mainly feared for his violence, but how it messes with your mind.
Another reason might be his need for revenge, though this idea isn’t what I really believe. I agree with Alfred (Michael Caine),
“Some men aren’t looking for anything logical. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just wanna watch the world burn. – Alfred the Butler, The Dark Knight (Michael Caine)
Ledger himself told (in an interview) that the part as The Joker was “The most fun I’ve ever had, probably will ever have playing a character…” I agree with most everyone out there that his performance was the best, scariest, funniest, most amazing Joker ever. He wasn’t just a scary killer-he was a monster. But a lovely monster at that. < 3
Rumors of him receiving the first posthumous Oscar since Peter Finch for the movie Network are going around, though some don’t even think he’ll get nominated. I certainly hope so, this performance was pretty much a performance that could have boosted Ledger up to a whole new level. Sadly, it was his last one, and probably the cause of his death (another story entirely).
Meanwhile, Christian Bale did an excellent job as well, he played a darker, more heroic (in a sense) Batman than ever before. This time, he really is, no matter how lame it sounds, “The Dark Knight.”
As Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) says in the movie, “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” This seems to be true for a desperate Bruce Wayne who tries to convince the citizens of Gotham that Batman may be a hero, but the true hero is Harvey Dent.
And, this may spoil your movie experience somewhat, so if you don’t want to know if the end of the movie is happy or not skip this paragraph: No, the movie does not end as happily as some wish. I prefer this ending as it isn’t your typical, “The hero gets the girl, everyone is saved, the bad guy dies.” Yes, (another spoiler, so don’t read this if you don’t want to) The Joker does die, or at least, we know that he will as he is left hanging with the SWAT team pointing guns in his face, but that can hardly be called happy, as he’s too bad to die (or at least get stuck in jail–this time, permanently). Then again, killing him won’t stop him.
The whole thing was exhilarating, thrilling, and a lovely movie. Aaron Eckhart was amazing, as were Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman. I highly suggest it, and I must say, even without the whole dark side of Batman, this movie is by far better than Superman, Spiderman, or any other super hero movie out there. GO AND SEE IT.
